A few days ago, Geoff Lawson tried to assume the role of a school teacher during the post match press conference after the Sri lanka vs Pakistan match. His behavior angered the media which boycotted the press conference. No one will forget the Ponting episode with the press during India vs Australia series early this year. Is this really a problem with the people concerned or are we missing something from the media side?
The present situation is in complete contrast with that present a decade ago or before. During the 80’s and 90’s, most of the articles published used to contain facts only. Now, there is a lot of interpretation between the lines and there is a lot of scrutiny. With its vast network and huge resources, media has now become a huge phenomenon and this is putting a lot of pressure on the players. Every move of the players is under the scanner. The players private life is mixed with their on-field behavior and thus their actions on the field are being judged by what they do off the field. Now, the media is ready to pounce on anything and the players need to have a lot of constraint while doing anything. Also, sometimes the criticism is not well directed and all these pressures are building up and finding a vent during the press conferences and other public events.
I am a big cricket fan myself, but this kind of behavior from players hurts the game on the whole. We need to take measures before this problem goes out of our hands. Media should maintain restraint and not the cross the line while posing questions and also the players need to be more patient. I hope everyone does their part in taking the game back to “GENTLEMEN’s GAME.”
